Brief Literary Analysis Edgar Allen Poe Free Essays

15 November 2012 Edgar Allan Poe Literary Analysis Edgar Allan Poe is frequently viewed as the most gifted American artist and short story essayist, and it is no big surprise in light of the fact that each abstract work made by Poe is composed with such capability, that even perusers today are amazed. In Poe’s short stories and sonnets, one will locate a similar not many topics in his works, for example, ladies, the shading red and an assortment of loathsomeness subjects, anyway one topic that is tedious is his work of death. This subject is utilized in numerous books today, and is additionally a well known topic in books, TV programs and videogames. We will compose a custom article test on Brief Literary Analysis Edgar Allen Poe or on the other hand any comparable subject just for you Request Now Peruse additionally Edgar Allan Poe Drugs Actually, since the 1800s, individuals have gotten progressively claimed by death. Passing was one of Poe’s most loved subjects, and is a main motivation behind why Poe’s abstract works are still understood today. In Poe’s short story â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death†, the subject of death frequently raised, for example, when the deadly â€Å"red death† infection was portrayed: when gotten, its host would feel â€Å"sharp torments, and abrupt dizziness† (1), and its host would have â€Å"profuse seeping of the pores† (1). The red demise was a boundless illness, however Prince Prospero’s mansion was sheltered from the red passing on the grounds that the sickness couldn’t move beyond the nunnery entryways. In his cheerful mind-set, the Prince sorted out a ball, this ball was not a common ball, yet it was a disguise, in which the visitors would wear veils and outfits. This story finishes in an amazingly savage way, in which each impostor capitulates to the red demise. The topic of this disguise was grim; numerous impostors wore extremely realistic outfits, which portend the shocking finish of this story. Another of Poe’s works, â€Å"Annabel Lee†, was really founded on his significant other, Virgiania Eliza Clemm Poe, and in the sonnet, Annabel is executed by the holy messengers over that were envious of the affection among Annabel and Poe. So one night, at the pinnacle of their envy, the conveyed a cloud â€Å"Chilling and killing† (4. 6) Poe’s Annabel Lee. The topic of death is evident in that Annabel Lee bites the dust in the sonnet, and the primary character is loaded up with a limitless trouble, that he even rests by the grave. What’s amusing about this sonnet is the way that Annabel kicks the bucket from a nippy breeze, and Virginia, in her last phase of utilization, bites the dust cold, and Poe, so poor, couldn't bear the cost of a cover for her, a straightforward extravagance that would have lit up her disposition a tad. The Fall of the House of Usher† is a one of a kind short story in that it was one of the first â€Å"haunted house† accounts of it’s time. This story was about a man who was welcomed by his companion, Roderick Usher, to brighten Usher up. The fundamental character before long shows up at the Usher house, which used to be wonderful, presently is an old onc e-over chateau. The main two Usher relatives that are as yet alive are the twins, Roderick and Madeline, and them two experience the ill effects of impossible to miss sicknesses, Roderick experiences a â€Å"morbid intensity of the senses† (3) and Madeline apparently endures structure a kind of immunodeficiency, wherein she gets dreadful sick regularly. The principal appearance of the topic of death is when Roderick states Madeline as â€Å"dead† and therefore covers Madeline rashly. Roderick knows about this, and close to the furthest limit of the story, Madeline breaks out of her final resting place and â€Å"with a low groaning cry, fell vigorously internal upon the individual of her brother,† (10) executing Roderick, another appearance of death. At the end, the estate vanishes, representing the demise of the Usher bloodline. The subject of death is obvious in this short story, so this topic isn't just a fortuitous event. Huge numbers of Poe’s stories incorporate passing, and â€Å"The Black Cat† is no special case. This story is one of his progressively ruthless stories in that the principle character previously hung his preferred feline, Pluto, and afterward â€Å"buried the axe† (4) in his wife’s head. The last demise is that of the principle character, when he is condemned to hang for his terrible deed of homicide. This subject of death is demonstrated as a typical topic now, for what it's worth in at any rate four of Poe’s abstract works, and these accounts aren’t the main ones that incorporate the topic of death. Passing is anything but a cheerful occasion. A burial service is typically a period of misery, and there is discouraging air that is filled by this pity. Poe reproduces this air in a large number of his works in the disposition of the story or sonnet. For instance, in â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher† this discouraging state of mind is increased when the peruser becomes mindful that the main outstanding Ushers alive are Roderick and Madeline. Another occurrence of increased disposition is in â€Å"The Black Cat† when Pluto is mercilessly executed by the fundamental character. This disposition is even clear in â€Å"Annabel Lee† when Poe composes â€Å"A wind came out of the cloud around evening time, Chilling and killing my excellent Annabel Lee† (4. 25-26). Poe is an ace at making this subject, as he adequately discourages the peruser with the discouraging mind-set of death. Poe is additionally capable at representing passing. The imagery of death takes various structures in Poe’s works running from basic images to rather complex ones. A model is the check in â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† in which the clock ringed consistently with a â€Å"dull, substantial, tedious clang† (2). A clock is an image of death since it continually helps the constrained life expectancy to remember a person. A fairly unpolished image of death is a final resting place, similar to the one Madeline Usher cushioned out of in â€Å"The Fall of the House of Usher. † The explanation a final resting place is an image of death is on the grounds that a cadaver is placed in a final resting place before the entombment of the body. The shading dark is likewise an image of death, which is the shade of the velvet embroidered works of art, hung in the seventh room in â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death† which is the room Prince Prospero and his kindred impostors are executed. In huge numbers of Poe’s works, the story happens in an old house, or mansion, the purpose for this is a more seasoned house for the most part implies it has endure a few ages, which can likewise be identified with death, on the grounds that an age is characterized as a gathering of individuals conceived at around a similar time, and since a person has a characterized life length, the finish of an age is the point at which the gathering of individuals bite the dust. The old Usher estate has endure a few ages of the Usher family, and it is additionally where a few of the Usher relatives are covered. Toward the end, it is the resting spot of Madeline and Roderick. At last, the house bafflingly vanishes when Madeline and Roderick pass on. Another old structure is Prince Prospero’s stronghold in â€Å"The Masque of the Red Death†, and that likewise has seen numerous ages of humanity, yet it additionally observes the passing of Prospero and his companions when the Red Death sneaks into the disguise and quickly executes them all. A lot of Poe’s works happen around evening time, once in a while does one of Poe’s works occur in the daytime. The night has consistently held notion for humankind since it is above all else, when people rest, and aren’t dynamic, and second of all, the natural eye can't find in obscurity well. As expressed previously, infrequently does one of Poe’s works occur in the day, truth be told, the four works referenced all happen around evening time. One may ask why a large number of Poe’s works were vicious, desolate, and why a considerable lot of his accounts incorporated a great deal of death. The clarification is on the grounds that Poe had a discouraging life. His dad was a drunkard that left after Poe was a year old and in the end kicked the bucket of liquor abuse. His mom thought about Poe until she passed on of utilization. After Poe’s mother had passed on, Francis Allan embraced Poe and Francis sent him to an exceptional school in England. What made this school curious was the manner by which the showed math and physical training. Math was shown utilizing dates on headstones, while physical instruction was educated by burrowing graves. This school could be a potential impact on Poe’s works, since he got the opportunity to accomplish memorial park work. Afterward, when he developed more seasoned, Poe had taken a sentimental enthusiasm for his friend’s (his friend’s name was Richard) mother. Tragically, Richard’s mother built up a tumor, and kicked the bucket. Not long after Poe had completed school, Francis Allan kicked the bucket of utilization, and she was the main explanation John Allan hadn’t expelled Poe yet, so once Francis passed on, Poe was ousted. After this occasion, Poe found another sentimental enthusiasm, in his embraced sister, Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe. Poe wedded her when he was twenty-six years of age. Sadly, Virginia additionally kicked the bucket from utilization. Presently it tends to be seen why Poe composed such a great amount about death, since he was encircled by it. Poe’s life was a fleeting and tragic one. A large number of his friends and family passed on from either utilization or different causes, and Poe was consistently poor. Poe turned into a heavy drinker, much the same as his dad, and he kicked the bucket at age forty. There was no rest for Poe, so the vast majority of his sentiments went into his verse and short stories, and that was what made him a fruitful author. In the time Poe lived, there was basic a horrendous malady called utilization, or all the more regularly referred to today as Tuberculosis. This ailment would assault the victim’s lungs, and gradually slaughter the person in question. The normal side effect of utilization is hacking up blood, however there are different side effects, for example, a fever, chest torments, a hack with expanding bodily fluid and a daily perspiration. This illness is could have been a major impact on Poe’s composing, since this ailment murdered a considerable lot of Poe’s adored and in a fairly vicious way. Another t

The Self Portrait An Interesting Genre Of Work - 1387 Words

Both of the women are well known for their self-portraits. The self-portrait is an interesting genre of work. There is a sense of spontaneity. The engagement is greater since the artist has a longer period of time to examine their own face, instead of having limited access. A painter knows their own face the best; in many artists’ work other subjects resemble the artist themselves. Women often portray themselves in their studios at work, evidence of professional accomplishment. Sometimes self-portraits are very truthful since the artist had time to examine every detail of their appearance. On the other hand, artists also can take liberties in creating their image in order to project themselves in a way that they desire. Salesmanship can come into play, even falsehood. Both Labille-Guiard and Kahlo were mostly truthful in their work, but chose carefully what they emphasized in order to best depict themselves in a desired manner. In Self Portrait with Two Students, painted in 1785, Labille-Guiard presents herself as poised and self-assured engaging in painting, and also as a teacher. This uses the rich palette and fine detail which reflects her earlier training. An Explosive Acquisition Of Language - 774 Words

As my almost two-year-old embarks upon her first meaningful conversations with us, I am reminded how important language and words are to each of us. Harper has only recently begun to proudly announce her name as she enters a room, counting to four, and identifying shapes in board books. Anything that is green is a frog, and anything that is furry is, of course, a dog. Her enthusiasm and delightful squeals when she has discovered a new word are mesmeric. Her brow furls as she processes and realizes that she, in fact, understands a new concept that did not exist in her world until 0.25 seconds prior. An explosive acquisition of language is allowing her to embrace the world in ways that had previously been inaccessible to her. Being almost two also seems overwhelming. When my sweet yet determined little lady does not have words to communicate her thoughts or her present needs at a given moment, she immediately becomes frustrated, distraught, or downright upset. Again, her brow crinkles up in a desperate attempt to make sense of her surroundings. This level of frustration often results in tears and necessitates a hug, which I secretly slightly enjoy (She ll only cuddle for so long). Her tears, however, also remind me to pause and consider the feelings of all those who feel as if they do not have a voice. Principles of Microeconomics Business System - MyAssignment.com

Question: Discuss about the Principles of Microeconomics Business. Answer: Introduction: The demand for a product depends on a number of factors like the price of the product, the income of the individual, the availability and price of other related commodities like substitutes and complements and the tastes and preferences of the consumers. On the other hand, the primary determinants of the supply of a product is the demand structure in the market, the price of the product, the price of inputs and other intermediate goods used in the production process, the availability of the factors of production required to produce the commodity, etc. (Pindyck and Rubinfeld, 2009). The demand for desktops depends primarily on the price of desktops, the incomes of individuals who can generate the demand for desktops, the availability and price of other related goods like laptops and tablets which act as substitutes and internet, software programs, etc. that would be complementary and also the tastes and preferences of the potential consumers in the market. The supply of desktops will again depend on the ongoing market price of similar desktops in the market, the prices and availability of inputs required in the production process like capital and labour or the price of keyboards and mouse required to be supplied with the desktop (Varian, 2009). Demand for Desktop The demand for desktops essentially depends on the price of desktops. When the price of desktops increases, the demand for desktops will fall and vice versa given that the other factors determining demand are constant (Mankiw, 2009). There is an inverse relationship between the price and the demand for desktops. Hence the demand for desktops with respect to price is represented by the downward sloping demand curve D. When the price was P, the demand for desktops was Q. when price increases to P, the demand falls to Q. Hence price determines the demand. Another primary determinant of the demand is the income of the individuals who generate potential demand for desktops. As the income of consumers increase, the demand for desktops will increase (Varian, 2009). This is shown in the following figure: As the income of the consumer increases, given the price, the demand curve shifts to the right. This is as shown in the figure by the movement from D to D. For the same price P, the demand increases from Q to Q with the increase in the income. Thus there is a positive relationship between the demand for desktops and the income of consumers. The demand for desktops will also depend on the price of related products like substitutes and complements. The primary substitute of desktop is laptop (Pindyck and Rubinfeld, 2009). When the price of laptop falls, the demand for desktops will shift to that of laptops. Laptop, as a device, is much more convenient to be used than a desktop. But people still purchase desktops because of the relatively mower price of the same. However, if the price of laptop falls, the demand for laptops will increase and that for desktops will fall. Another remote substitute can be tablets which serve at least some of the purpose. This is shown in the following figure: A decline in the price of laptops reduces the demand for desktops as represented by the shift of the demand curve from D to D. Thus, even when the price of desktops remains the same, the demand for desktops falls from Q to Q. Consumers will now substitute their purchase of desktops with that of laptops. Another substitute for desktops will be the same kind of desktops produced by other competitors. Thus when the price fluctuates for one brand, people might shift to purchasing some other brand (Mankiw, 2014). The complements of desktops may be an internet connection or some software programs that a person needs to use. Individuals primarily purchase desktops to enable the use of internet at home. However, if the cost of internet service is high, then the demand for desktops will fall because the main purpose of buying a desktop will not be solves if people cannot afford to purchase the internet connection (Varian, 2009). Again, let an individual wants to buy a desktop to install some software that he might want to learn. If the price of the software increases, the demand for the desktop will also increase again because the main purpose of purchasing the desktop will not be fulfilled. This is shown in the following diagram: The figure is the same as the above case. When the price of internet connection or different software programs increase, the demand for these will fall. This fall in the demand for complementary goods will translate into a fall in the demand for desktops on the part of consumers who want to use both together. This is represented by a shift of the demand curve from D to D. The quantity demanded of desktops falls from Q to Q. Thus cheaper substitute goods reduce the demand for desktops and cheaper complementary goods increases the demand for the same (Pindyck and Rubinfeld, 2009). The demand for desktops is also determined by the tastes and preferences of consumers. The demand changes with changes in the tastes and preferences of potential consumers in the desktop markets. With changing economic conditions, the tastes and preferences of consumers change and hence their demand for desktops will also change. As and when the economy is advancing, there is an evident shift in the demand for desktops because people are demanding more of laptops due to the convenience involved. Hence the demand for desktops will fall. The supply of desktops fundamentally depends on the price of desktops. When the market price increases, the supply of laptops will also increase as shown in the following diagram: The curve S represents the supply of desktops with respect to the price. When the price is P, the supply is Q. As the price increases to P the supply also increases to Q. Thus supply is positively relative to the tentative price in the market. As the demand for a desktops rises in the market, the price increases in order to eliminate excess demand. However, the supply also adjusts in order to meet the increasing demand. Hence, when demand increases, the supply also rises (Mankiw, 2014). The supply of desktops also depends on the price of inputs such as hardware, screens, etc. and keyboards, mouse etc. The cost of production basically determines the supply of desktops. As the cost of production increases, the supply of desktops will fall and vice versa. Thus is shown in the following diagram: Given the price of desktops, when the cost of production increases, the supply curve shifts leftwards from S to S. Thus, the supply of desktops will fall from Q to Q. The reduction in the supply is due to a rise in the cost of production resulting from rising factor costs. Conclusion Thus, the demand and supply of desktops depend on a variety of factors. The changes in the two components will depend on the relative changes in all the given factors. The equilibrium in the desktop market is established when the demand for desktops in the market is exactly equal to the supply of desktops. In that case, there will be no excess demand or excess supply in the market (Varian, 2009). The market structure for desktops thus depends on all the determinants of demand and supply. It will change as and when any of these factors change. Other than the given factors, there will be many other random factors that might affect the demand or the supply on an occasional basis. Teachers vs. coaches Essay Example For Students

Teachers vs. coaches Essay Compare Contrast In the real world, people search for jobs that will give them personal satisfaction, along with a good paycheck. Unfortunately, we all are not lucky enough to get the jobs that we want, so we have to settle for what is available at the time. I mean, how many people really dreamed of being like Calvin, and working at McDonalds, or who really had aspirations of laboring at the local Shell station? This is not always the case, a lot of people actually decide what they want to be, then actually accomplish their career goals. Most people, when searching for a career, usually pick something that they would enjoy, rather than something that they hate to do, but pays well. There are all types of fulfilling jobs such as doctors, social workers, policeman, fireman, and teachers. We will write a custom essay on Teachers vs. coaches specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Teachers are a very special group of people, how many people do you know that would take other peoples kids, and watch them for eight hours a day, five days a week, forty days a year. Another group of special people are coaches; these people basically work all year round to help the people that they are coaching reach their full potential. The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast these two professions; in many ways they are similar, but can also be very different in other ways. Hopefully, by the end of this paper, I will have a clearer view on which profession is more valuable than the other. The first profession that I will be looking at is the job of being a teacher. Over the last fifteen years, the job of being a teacher has been looked on less and less. In the past, being a teacher was almost as well respected as being a doctor, now being a teacher is viewed in the same light as working at Target. (Well maybe not that low.) How did this happen, going from a top profession, to a job that people take because they didnt achieve what they really wanted to do. The reason teaching has been such a bad rap is because of the teachers. Many have apathetic views when it comes to teaching the students, I have had countless teachers that given assignments without really explaining what the assignment was about. True, there are bad teachers, but there are also good teachers, and some teachers are even great. How many people would take you to your SAT test at six thirty in the morning, then after picking you up, take you out to eat; well my teacher did, really boosting my will to go to college. Coaching is also one of those professions that hasnt been in the best of lights in recent years. Coaches, like teachers, are responsible for the growth and well being of their players, so when things dont go well with the team, the coaches come under fire. One big difference between a good teacher and a good coach is that a good coach can get fired just because of a teams performance. I have seen many good coaches get fired just because they had the horrible task of coaching the Clippers. Good coaches can usually turn a bad team around after a couple of years, but must be given time to make the necessary changes to help the progress of the team. Another similarity between teachers and coaches is in order to excel to the top of their profession, they need to love their jobs. You know the ones who do; they are the teacher who taught for 30 plus years, and the coach who the city loves. (I.e. Sparky Anderson, Lenny Wilkens, etc) When a person truly loves their profession, then they basically can do their job as long as their body allows them to do it. Also when a person loves their job, they have an uncanny ability to pass on their wisdom; when a great coach or teacher tries to explain something, its definitely a lot easier to comprehend what they are trying to tell you. .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 , .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 .postImageUrl , .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 , .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4:hover , .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4:visited , .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4:active { border:0!important; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4:active , .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4 .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc1d74a4fa0c13e8cfc8402196cf5afd4:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Anne Frank Essay That is the reason why you generally feel that you liked that teacher/coach more rather than the one who wasnt as . Prescription Painkillers, the New Drug Abuse of Choice

Prescription Painkillers, the New Drug Abuse of Choice Abstract In the recent past, statistics have shown that as the government increases efforts to curb the use of various illegal drugs, people have turned to prescription drugs, which are increasingly becoming the new forms of drug abuse. Among the most commonly abused prescription drugs are prescription painkillers since they are readily available through various illegitimate online drug stores with or without a formal prescription.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Prescription Painkillers, the New Drug Abuse of Choice specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More But owing to the increase in the number of people visiting emergency departments with complications related to prescription painkiller abuse or overdoses, there is the imperative need for the government and other key stakeholders to address this public health problem speedily. This can be achieved through law enforcement and public education about the correct use s of such medications, which can cause fatal complications if misused. As policy-makers move to curb the use of street drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, and heroin, shocking statistics show that there has been a sharp increase in the misuse of prescription drugs in the United States. According to McCarthy (2007), the number of cases related to the misuse of prescription drugs increased by 21% in 2004-2005. More specifically, the number of visits to the emergency departments as a result of non-medical use of prescription drugs rose from 495,732 in 2004 to about 598,542 cases in 2005. Moreover, the Drug Abuse Warning Network reported that there were more than 1.4 million emergency department visits in 2005 that were related to the misuse of drugs (McCarthy, 2007). Out of these cases, about 27% were related to the misuse of prescription drugs. Among the most commonly abused drugs in 2004-2005 were benzodiazepines (19%), opiates and opioids (24%), and methadone (29%). Studies attribute the recent increase in the misuse of prescription drugs to an increase in the use of the Internet, which facilitates the growth of illegitimate online drug stores and uncontrolled online prescription drug sales. One study has examined the effect of growth in the use of high-speed Internet on the availability of commonly misused prescription drugs in the United States. The study findings demonstrate that for each 10% increase in the use of high-speed Internet in different parts of the United States, the number of emergency department visits related to misuse of prescription drugs increases by 1%. Based on these results, the researchers recommend that the government should monitor the possible threat posed by the rising number of illegitimate online drug stores that could be encouraging the misuse of prescription drugs (Jena Goldman, 2011). On the other hand, considering that prescription painkillers are among the most commonly abused prescription drugs, this paper examines the most recent statistics regarding the misuse of prescription painkillers with the aim of outlining possible solutions to this public health problem.Advertising Looking for research paper on health medicine? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Prescription Painkiller Abuse For many years, a variety of opioid analgesics such as oxycodone, methadone, oxymorphine, and hydrocodone have been used in the management of pain. However, in the recent past, different types of these drugs have been availed in the market and the number of prescriptions for opioids has increased considerably. Therefore, as the medical use of opioids continues to increase, so does the nonmedical uses. In fact, McCarthy (2007) indicates that the non-medical use of prescription painkillers is estimated to cost the health care sector about US$72.5 billion annually. On the other hand, according to statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Preven tion in 2009, there were about 500,000 visits to the emergency department as a result of prescription painkiller overdoses. Of these cases, more than 15,500 people died as a result of prescription painkiller poisoning. These cases of prescription painkiller overdoses can be attributed to all types of opioids, but methadone has contributed to at least 30% of such cases. As a result, it is surprising that methadone is the leading cause of prescription painkiller deaths even though its total prescriptions are no more than 2% of all painkiller prescriptions written in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2012). For decades, methadone has been medically prescribed for the management of drug addiction. Moreover, it is an effective painkiller, which provides long-lasting effects for pain relief. However, it is imperative to note that as the medical uses of methadone increase, so does the nonmedical uses owing to its widespread availability in most pharmacies and online drug stores. Shockingly, studies by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have warned against the indiscriminate use of methadone owing to several risks associated with the drug. The major risks associated with methadone include increased toxicity at low doses, drug build up that can cause slowed breathing, and disruption of the heart’s rhythm. Nonetheless, different pharmacies across the United States received more than four million prescriptions for this drug in 2009. Moreover, methadone is readily available to many people considering that it is a low-cost generic drug recommended by many physicians and insurance companies. However, the major problem with this drug is that many cases of methadone-related deaths involve people who purchase the drug without a formal prescription. Accordingly, studies indicate that most people obtain methadone using illegal prescriptions or through other means such as drug diversion (CDC, 2012).Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Prescription Painkillers, the New Drug Abuse of Choice specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Recommendations From the foregoing discussions, it is evident that the risk of prescription painkiller abuse has increased considerably in the last decade. This has been attributed to an increase in the availability of prescription painkillers through illegitimate online drug stores and other illegal means such as drug diversion. As a result, there is the immediate need for the United States government to engage other stakeholders in ensuring that federal laws prohibiting the non-medical use and possession of prescription painkillers are enforced to the letter. On the other hand, health care providers should ensure that they follow the correct guidelines that govern the use of different prescription painkillers including methadone. Moreover, health care providers should design proper prescription drug monitoring systems in order to ensure that their patients do not misuse prescription painkillers (CDC, 2012). Overall, a close collaboration between the government, healthcare providers, and health insurance providers can go a long way in terms of preventing or reducing prescription drug abuse and overdoses. The Six Core Functions Performed by the Financial System Essay

The Six Core Functions Performed by the Financial System - Essay Example The set of institutional arrangements for accomplishing this task is collectively known as the payments system. Banks and other depository financial intermediaries fulfill this function thru wire transfers, checking accounts, and credit cards. Function 2. Pooling Resources and Subdividing Shares The mechanism for the pooling of funds in a financial system is done so that it could undertake large-scale indivisible enterprise or for the subdividing of shares to form larger amounts of capital. In modern economies, the minimum investment required to start or maintain a business is often beyond the regular means of an individual or even several individuals. From the perspective of firms raising capital, the financial system provides a variety of mechanisms (such as security markets and financial intermediaries) through which individual households can pool their money to form larger amounts of capital. An interesting function of a financial system is its ability to transfer resources across time and space. Serving this function are intermediaries like banks involved in financing corporate investments and housing, insurance companies and pension funds in financing corporate investments and paying retirement annuities, and mutual funds. International Liberalism Theory

International Liberalism Theory Liberalism Views Liberalism earned its recognition in the 18th century from Western political philosophy where German writer Immanuel Kant and French author Baron de Montesquieu determined its relevance to international politics. In the 19th century, British philosophers John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham wrote about liberalism as it affected the world. Many global leaders examined the elements of liberalism in their policies and wrote about them applying them to international situations. Liberalist views have a positive factor that people, countries and governments can work together to solve their problems and make peace within the world. Liberalism Theories Some liberalism theories show there are many challenges that have not been overcome that would ease the suffering of the world. Liberals view international relations as cooperative, constructive efforts between countries and governments to aid poor nations to promote global welfare and economic stability. However, liberalists also believe in promoting capitalism and economic prosperity through global democracy, self-regulation of the markets, equality, liberty and restricted governmental control. Modern liberalism supports coordinating both state and non-state relations to promote global peace and improve the political, economic and social situations around the world (Burchill, 2001, 54-69, 9-10). International Liberalism Liberals are optimistic about the role of the organization. International organizations include not only intergovernmental organizations IGOs but also nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). â€Å"Liberals also see international organizations as shaping the international landscape. International organizations include not only intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) but also nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that can have both public and private functions.† (Doyle, 1995, 74-77). Governments are important because they have independent and indirect influences on the domestic and foreign policies of states. Cooperation between state governments is needed for organizations to achieve their goals. The nature of international relations combines conflict and cooperation between states and non-state organizations because they rely on one another. Competing interests can control or lobby the government to achieve their goals. Liberals are also concerned about the individuals involved because they are part of the society. There are many organizations other than the state that believe in the realist approach and focus on the nation-state, while liberal thinking analyzes the individual person. Liberals view the international world as it deals with each other through global trade agreements, travelers visiting or studying abroad, and international institutions like the United Nations, where no governmental control from the realist’s point of view does not quite cover all the different contexts of daily life. Liberals feel that realists view nations as warring forces that try to balance power through force. However, that is not the liberalist view (Doyle, 1995, 60-65). Liberalism Among Nations Liberalists believe an international society that can work together with all countries can help them solve their problems. This involves international trade between nations, and a different outlook where disorder is not useful and wars should end so people can work together and live in peace. Liberals feel that realists make countries out to be always conflicting with each other, and never getting along or having a balance of power. Liberals view the future as full of growth and independence that will make the differences between international and domestic politics lead to a universe that has no borders. Environmental problems are an example of how the world is all in the same situation, no matter how developed or wealthy their nation is. However, realists that that the Middle East may be the exception to the rules, since there may always be political problems there due to oil profits and the threat of Muslim terrorism to countries like the US (especially after the problems with the World Trade Center hijackings and the fact that 16 out of 19 of the terrorists were from the Middle East) (Brown, 2005, 4-8). The US believed Iraq needed government intervention to ensure the stability of their society because through liberalism, they would be able to achieve peace. No getting involved in the internal affairs of states should be a basic international law. The US was willing to get involved in Iraq because they saw an opportunity to appear to be helping them solve their problems and also gain military presence within the Middle East. Without outside interference, the Iraqi situation might have become much worse, according to the US, since Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship was overpowering the poor people and destroying their economy. Neoliberalists believed that the US could invade and gain cooperation with the Iraqi people so the state’s issues would be resolved. (However, now everyone knows that the US only wanted to gain control of Iraqis oil supply) (Brown, 2005, 153, 155, 158, 255). Comparing Liberalism to Realism and Idealism Theories The liberalism and realism theories involved in domestic politics suggest that the use of force by various groups often leads to the government trying to maintain power through media intervention, turning the public against the attackers, and a show of sympathy by the rulers to gain the public’s support and sympathy. The major assumptions of realism explain that the Saudi government and the terrorists are the only significant players in the situation, that military force is the principal method of solving problems, and that the overall security of the country is the key objective that must be achieved. The main concept behind liberalism is that there is a balance of power that must be kept at all times between the governing parties and those who they are trying to please. The liberalist view explains how war is only needed in seriously dangerous circumstances, not for the development of universal community or for the growth of the economy. In a country like Saudi Arabia, the religious Matawas feel the Saudi government is being influenced and controlled by America and the United Nations to conform to their society’s rules or risk losing oil contracts and other business negotiations (Nathanson, 2002, 48-52). When applying these theories of realism and liberalism to countries with political problems, it helps to explain how their internal difficulties would be very complex to find solutions for. Saudi’s internal political problems relate to what exactly is a legitimate use of force, and when is it acceptable to apply it. The Matawas felt that since the government was not listening to their protests concerning the changing policies that would open up the nation and allow for a totally new society to develop, that bombing innocent people was the just method of retaliating (Voegelin, 1974, 3-8, 205). Although liberalism is a more positive and helpful theory, realism is the most popular concept in international politics where the worst problem is war and military force, and the major characters involved are the countries or states themselves. Realists believe that liberals overstate the difference between international politics and domestic politics, since realists see the state of war as only needed under very critical circumstances, and liberals refuse to see the benefits of economic independence, growth and development of international global communities. Realists believe that states do not always go to war, and they have many other options, such as peace and trade between nations (Brown, 2005, 4-7, 45). While realist views emphasize continuity, permanence and stability within the society, liberal views stress change is needed, especially in the Middle Eastern region, since the world is said to be moving past anarchy to a better overall situation that desires world peace. Combining continuity and change is the best overall solution, however, the mixture of both liberalist and realist views would have to involve altering human behavior, which is almost impossible, especially on an international and political level that depends on unethical governments for their decision-making. Idealists believe international relations should focus more on the actual causes of global conflicts and how they can be changed for the better. Idealists look for ways to improve the situations, and create peace and stability within all nations. Idealists want to reduce illiteracy and inequality in the world and allow for more education and job opportunities. They want to rid the world of poverty and starvation, and fight against liberalists who believe the situation is may be difficult or cannot be resolved without the help of governments (Voegelin, 1974, 120-127). Conclusion Liberalists feel the alliances and contacts that manage to be formed across borders (like the UN and USA getting involved during global conflicts) form a global society that represents a non-warring world that must exist alongside the warring world. Liberalists feel that realists overstate the differences between national and global politics as a state of war, which concentrates only on the worst part of the situation. Liberalists believe that realists overlook the growth and development of economic independence and the progress of a international society. However, countries at war find resolutions and negotiate their way back into society with the help of others, and their economies can then succeed. REFERENCE Steins, J. (2004). Richard Nixon Essay -- Presidents Biography Essays

Richard Nixon The President of the United States is often considered the most powerful elected official in the world. The President leads a nation of great wealth and military strength. Presidents have often provided decisive leadership in times of crisis, and they have shaped many important events in history. The President has many roles and performs many duties. As chief executive, the President makes sure that federal laws are enforced. As commander in chief of the nation's armed forces, the President is responsible for national defense. As foreign policy director, the President determines United States relation with other nations. As legislative leader, the President recommends new laws and works to win their passage. As head of a political party, the President helps mold the party's positions on national and foreign issues. As popular leader, the President tries to inspire the American people to work together to meet the nation's goals. Finally, as chief of state, the President perf orms a large variety of ceremonial duties. The thirty-seventh President, Richard Milhous Nixon, was born on January 9, 1913, in Yorba Linda, California. He was the second of the five sons of Francis Anthony Nixon and Hannah Milhous Nixon. At the age of about ten, he began working part time as a bean picker. During his teens, he worked as a handyman in a packinghouse, janitor at a swimming pool, and barker at an amusement park. While in college, Nixon served as bookkeeper and as manager of the vegetable department of his father's store. Always a good student, he was invited by Harvard and Yale to apply for scholarships, but his older brother's illness and the Depression made his presence close to home necessary. So he attended nearby Whittier College, where he graduated second in his class in 1934. He went on to law school at Duke University, where his seriousness and determination won him the nickname "Gloomy Gus." He graduated third in his class and applied for jobs with both large northeastern law firms and the FBI. His applications were all rejected, so he was forced to go home to southern California, where his mother helped get him a job at a friend's local law firm. Shortly after returning home, Nixon met Thelma Catharine Ryan. At that time she was teaching commercial subjects at Whittler High School. They were married on June 21, 1940. The Ni... ...r resigning the presidency, Nixon sought to portray himself as an elder statesman. He published five books on US foreign policy: The Real War (1980), Real Peace (1983), No More Vietnams (1985), 1999: Victory without War (1988), Seize the Moment (1992), and Beyond Peace (1994). By the 1990s, much of the scandal had been forgotten, and Nixon was once again hailed as a genius of foreign policy. He later died on April 22, 1994, in New York City of a massive stroke. Richard Nixon's wife, Patricia Ryan Nixon, was an excellent mother and an even better wife. She was a tireless campaigner when her husband ran unsuccessfully for President in 1960, and was at his side when Richard ran again in 1968 and won. Along with adding over six hundred paintings and antiques to the White House, and encouraging voluntary service; she traveled nearly everywhere with Nixon. She did many things to help the President, one for example, she visited Africa and South America with the unique diplomatic standing of Personal Representatives of the President. And again when Nixon was accused in the Watergate scandal she supported him one hundred percent. Patricia was always a charming and caring person.

Baseball: Then and Now Essay

â€Å"The game of baseball has now become beyond question the leading feature of the outdoor sports of the United States†¦It is a game which is peculiarly suited to the American temperament and disposition:†¦ in short, the pastime suits the people, and the people suit the pastime†(Charles Peverelly, 1866). Although baseball is still America’s favorite pastime, the way it is played has changed greatly since it’s founding in the 1800’s. Baseball was originally created so there would be something the boys could do to keep busy during the summer months. Now, baseball has changed greatly because of technological and technique advancements, rule alterations, and the commercialization of the game. Since its origination in the mid 1800’s, baseball has undergone many changes and advancements in technology and technique. When it was first played, there was no such thing as a glove used to help catch the ball. The fielders would play bare-handed, making line drives automatic hits and ground balls even harder to handle. The bat has undergone many changes as well. Batters used to hit the ball with a bat that had a flat side. This was comparable to a cricket paddle except slightly longer and slimmer. Now, players of any age or level use bats that are cylinder shaped with a slightly wider section on the end. In the 1800’s, the general public was not as safety oriented as is today’s society. This is shown by the complete lack of helmets worn by players in the mid 1800’s. Now, helmets are required by rule to be worn by the batter when he is hitting. Helmets are made of a highly durable, shock absorbent outer shell with soft interior padding for comfort. Other advances were demonstrated by the change in pitching style and technique. The first pitchers threw two kinds of pitches: a high pitch and a low pitch. Then, they added outside and inside pitches. After that, change ups and fastballs were developed. Now, sliders, sinkers, curveballs, forkballs, screwballs, and knuckleballs are routine pitches. As a result of today’s pitchers like Pedro Martinez and Greg Maddux – who throw less hittable pitches – hitting techniques have been worked on, and players have become better hitters. For  example, the first great hitters such as Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle would not be able to compete with Alex Rodriguez and Barry Bonds – the best batters of today. The advancements in technology and style have completely changed the way baseball is played, as have the many changes that were made to the rulebook. Since its early beginning in the mid 1800’s through 1975, baseball has developed and modified many old rules into new rules that keep the game flowing. In 1889, a rule was introduced that if four balls were thrown during the span of one player’s at-bat, the player was allowed to â€Å"walk† to first base. This was an immense change from the old rule, which stated that if nine pitches total were thrown during the at-bat, the hitter would â€Å"walk† to first base. Also that year, the batter could be thrown only three strikes before he was called out. In 1969, a standard strike zone was added that included the area from the batter’s armpits to the top of his knees. These three rules eliminated the lengthy at bats that slowed down the game, standardized play, and made less room for controversial called strikes or balls. Not only were changes made in the playing rules, there were also many changes in the equipment rules. In 1889, the catcher was allowed to wear a padded leather mitt and a chest protector. This rule made being the catcher more bearable. By 1893, bat size and shape was enforced, and in 1975, the last change was made; the baseball could be covered with cowhide because of the shortage of horses. Because of the plethora of changes that were made to the rulebook, baseball today contrasts baseball in the 1800’s. The most explicit cause of the changes in baseball is the amount of commercialization that occurs today. The professional baseball players of today are shown on TV and in newspapers; their replica jerseys are sold at around $70 per item; and the players make an average of $600,000 per year. Compared to the absence of salary until the 1920’s, this is a major difference. In 1922, Babe Ruth made $50,000 in 1989, Kirby Puckett made $3,000,000 and in 2000, Alex Rodriguez made $27,000,000. Many players of today play for money, not for their love of the game like they used to. This shows that baseball is no longer a game, but a job. Another change is the publicity baseball receives. Stadiums today can hold as many as 62,409 people (Veterans Stadium, Philadelphia). The first ball parks did not even have a place for spectators to watch. Not only do professional stadiums attract viewers, but they attract salesmen and the media. For example, Hormel ® does not provide 7th inning stretch entertainment to show their support for baseball; they do it simply to advertise to a very large crowd for a very small price. Baseball today has grown rapidly into a target for cheap advertising and money-making. With the emphasis and importance of baseball on Americans’ lives today, it has rapidly grown into America’s favorite pastime. Through technological and technique advancements, rule alterations, and the commercialization of the game, baseball has changed greatly from the unorganized backyard game into America’s favorite pastime. â€Å"I think Little League Baseball is wonderful. It keeps the kids out of the house.† (Yogi Berra, 1954)

So whats a college student to do in the meantime? Take a Class for Fun You might be feeling slumpish because you are having to take tons of prereqs before you can get into the nice, meaty courses required for your major. Or you may not even be sure what to major in. Either way, add a little spice to your routine by taking a class just for fun. It can be yoga, ballet, an art class, or anything thats out of the ordinary for you. Join a New Club or Organization Your first year in school, you were probably so busy adjusting to life as a college student that your time management skills were -- shall we say -- less than stellar. But now that you know the ropes, join a new club or organization that will provide you with a creative outlet and something enjoyable to do each week. Get Involved in Student Government Even if youve never done student government before, see if you can represent your residence hall, your academic class, or even a constituency you belong to (like transfer students, for example). It can be a great way to keep you motivated to talk to other students, stay on top of current issues, and develop some leadership skills. (Not to mention that it looks good on your resume.) Volunteer on Campus No matter where you go to school, chances are that there is some kind of volunteer program you can join. See who needs volunteers this year and you just might end up motivating yourself along with others. Volunteer in the Local Community Maybe a change of scene is more whats needed. If so, see what volunteer options are available in your local community. Mentor First-year Students You just might be in the sophomore slump because you are doing well in college -- which means that perhaps you can be a good role model for incoming first-year students who need some guidance about adjusting to college life. See if your school has a mentoring program you can join -- and if not, see about starting one yourself! Get a Fun Job On Campus True, most students work in college for the money. But if you need to mix things up a little, this can be a great way to still get income while also enjoying yourself. Work in the campus coffee shop, at the theater, or in any other avenue that offers a fun, engaging environment. Get a Fun Job Off Campus Perhaps you do need a change of scene from your campus but dont have the time to volunteer. Try to combine both your financial needs and your need for change into an off-campus job that is interesting and something new. Get Involved Politically What are local politics like near your school? Can you volunteer on someones campaign? Join a national campaign for a person or an issue you care about? Become involved in a movement for a cause that is near and dear to your heart? Start Planning a Great Trip Sophomore year can be a little challenging because there often isnt one big thing to look forward to. So why not create your own highlight of the year? See what your options are for planning a fun trip over Thanksgiving break, winter break, spring break, or even a long weekend coming up. It just might do the trick of getting you out of your sophomore slump and back into your normal groove.
